390,000+ Raised in 2014!

The 2014 Spring 4 Kids fundraiser, benefiting International Paper’s signature giving program, Coins 4 Kids, concluded on Saturday, April 12, which marked a “Decade of Dedication” for International Paper. Thanks to your generosity and spreading the word, more than $322,000 was raised in the campaign’s online auction. The entire week of events proved to be a great success for Coins 4 Kids as the auction, combined with other events around the company, raised more than $390,000 – a more than $184,000 increase over 2013 totals.
Since 2004, Coins 4 Kids has raised more than $8.5 million to provide in-school meals to children in nearly 100 schools. With current enrollment, approximately 70,000 kids receive a nutritious meal every day. This year’s Spring 4 Kids event raised enough money to feed more than 7,800 children. The International Paper Foundation is expected to donate more funds to World Food Program USA this year to support the Coins 4 Kids program. Thank you all for your generosity and support!

My Students Did Not Eradicate World Hunger

My husband was transferred to Memphis with IP when I was 4 months pregnant.  I did not know a soul.  All of my family and all of my friends were across the country and it was hard. Lonely and hard.

One afternoon, a neighbor rang my doorbell and handed me dinner.  I was overcome with gratitude. It was such a simple, yet powerful gesture.  For the first time, I really FELT what Mother Teresa was saying when she said, "If you can't feed a hundred, feed just one."

I teach World Geography at the Collierville Connection, a homeschool cooperative.  During our unit on Africa, we discussed Coins4Kids, the World Food Programme, and did a class project on food insecurity in America.  We discussed the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly food stamps, and planned menus for a family of four spending $4 a day per family.  It was an eye opening, difficult task.

When the homework was turned in, the class wanted to do more.  They decided to create a service project to raise money for the Collierville Food Pantry.

I will proudly give my students all of the credit.  They came up with the plan and I got out of their way!   They decided to sell pizza to their friends during the lunch break.  First, they designed and put together an interactive bulletin board with facts about hunger as a way to teach their classmates what had touched them about hunger and to advertise their project.  Then, they designed flyers to pass out at school and an email advertising campaign to send to all the Connection families.

We needed some pizza and Russo's New York Pizza of Germantown generously donated all of the pizza for our sale!

The students gave up their lunches and free periods to sell the pizza - and they sold every slice!  In the end, the class raised $265 for the Collierville Food Pantry.  We hadn't even gotten the empty boxes to the trash before the students and some of the other teachers were thinking of ways to make it bigger next year!

My students did not eradicate world hunger.  They did not raise enough money to feed 100 people.  But they did make a difference for everyone who WILL be fed because of their their community spirit, their kindness, and their enthusiasm to make a difference.  They fed SOMEONE today.

It is this same spirit that makes Coins4Kids such a success every year.  So many people give their time and talent to feed SOMEONE, which turns out to be SO MANY  in the end.

The Adventures of Rita and Caroline, Part III

The weather has been brutal in Memphis this winter, but that hasn’t stopped our two fearless solicitors from venturing out for donations.

This time we find them at a random business in Memphis.  They enter and tell their story to the business owner only to find that her daughter had started school in Kenya several years ago.  She had firsthand knowledge of the situation in Nairobi and was willing and happy to make a donation.

The odds of meeting a business owner in Memphis who has a child that started school in Kenya are very low, but once again it was the perfect combination needed to feed the children in Nairobi. Again, that’s what it’s all about.

Cups of Candy Campaign a Big Hit!

CPB/FS, T3, 4th & 5th floor ran a “Cups of Candy” campaign just in time for Valentine’s Day.
For $5 folks could order a cup of mixed candy (the good stuff).  They could request a personalized message and have it delivered to the recipient of their choice.
The team made cute tags with the buyer’s message.  Then they decorated and filled IP cups with candy (cups courtesy of FS), and dropped them in a cellophane bag that was tied off with ribbon and attached with a personalized message tag.

Buyers ordered them as a thank you to co-workers. Teams bought them for their managers. Managers bought them for their teams, and many more bought them to take home.
The team hand delivered the wonderful happy on Valentine’s day!

In the end, the Cups of Candy Campaign made $430!!!

That is one very sweet story, with a really sweet ending!

Congratulations CPB/FS, T3, 4th and 5th floor on your successful event to help feed the children in Nairobi, Kenya!

Global Sourcing Auction Raises over $7,000 for Coins 4 Kids!

The results are in! Amazing! During their lunch time, Global Sourcing held its own live and silent auction and raised over $7,000 to feed the children in Nairobi!

Floor Champion Neta Lathum coordinated all the activities and is so proud they were able to raise twice the amount they did last year!  The energy was high as employees bid on a variety of items including Grizzlies tickets, NCAA tickets, golf outings, hotel packages, lunch with Dave Liebetreu, VP Global Sourcing and a 30 minute face-to-face with IP CEO John Faraci, just to name a few.

Neta's plan was to raise enough money to fund the Global Sourcing basket for the annual basket raffle that takes place during the Spring 4 Kids week in Memphis. This year, she raised enough money to put together an amazing basket and give a very generous cash donation to Coins 4 Kids! The Global Sourcing basket is themed "San Francisco - A Gateway Experience" and will include these great items:

**Roundtrip Airfare for 2
**Hotel Stay for 4 days
**Rental Car
**Cruise around the port of San Francisco
**San Francisco Tour
**Movie "The Rock"
**Tour Book of San Francisco
**Wine Glasses & several bottles of wine
**Assortment of chocolates and other food items

You can buy tickets for the raffle baskets during the Spring 4 Kids week, April 7th to 11th.  Baskets will be raffled on April 11th during the employee luncheon at the Towers in Memphis!

The Spring 4 Kids team would like to send a huge thank you to Neta, her volunteers and to the Global Sourcing employees who participated in this fun event!  Your efforts, enthusiasm and dedication to Coins 4 Kids are appreciated.  Because of you, so many children will enjoy a hot meal in school; a meal that is often one of the main reasons they come to school and stay in school.

(Auctioneer Rick Ouellette gets the crowd excited)

(Employees bid on Lunch with Dave Liebetreu)

(Neta was very happy to have Heath Faraci join in the fun!)

Coins 4 Kids is an International Paper signature giving program in partnership with the World Food Program that provides in-school nutritious meals to children in poverty stricken areas across Nairobi, Kenya. Thanks to employee, company, community and other stakeholder gifts, more than $8 million has been raised since 2004 to provide school-aged children with healthy meals annually.

The Coins 4 Kids auction will take place starting THIS coming Monday, April 7, at 7:00am (cst) through Saturday, April 12, at 6:00pm (cst).

Note: Coins 4 Kids supporters also collect bills and change in red collection cups, modeled after the red cups that the World Food Program fills with nutritious food for the children. Behind the Camera! Stacy Royalty!

Meet Stacy Royalty! Stacy's husband, Jay, works at International Paper Company.

Stacy has photographed all of the items for the online auction since the first year the auction went online. That translates into 1000's of photos! Every year the auction looks so amazing thanks to Stacy's dedication and passion for this cause!

Stacy and Jay's children, Trey and Katie, are passionate about feeding the children in Nairobi, Kenya too!  The first time they learned of the kids in Nairobi, they wanted to donate their allowance to help. Katie has baked something for the bake sale or painted a picture to be sold in the auction every year. The children of Nairobi benefit from IP's Coins 4 Kids and the children of IP employees also benefit. In Katie's words, "I like helping the kids have a better life."

"Not only are we helping to feed and educate children in such a challenged part of the world, we are teaching our own children compassion, empathy and that they can make a difference!" Stacy Royalty

The Adventures of Rita and Caroline, Part II

Rita and Caroline are at it again, diligently soliciting donations for such a great cause! This time they visited a hair salon in East Memphis.

Upon entering the salon they were greeted by one of the stylists. They explained that they were soliciting donations for Coins 4 Kids, an organization that works in cooperation with the World Food Programme to feed children in Nairobi, Kenya. The stylist told them that they would need to speak to the owner who wasn’t in at the time.
During the exchange, the client of the stylist overheard the conversation and asked if Rita and Caroline could wait a few minutes until she was done. Of course they waited to see what she had to say. It turned out this woman had a brother who had been in the Peace Corps in Africa and she was delighted to make a donation. She wrote a check for $200 on the spot!
Was it a coincidence that the generous person was having her hair done on the day that Rita and Caroline visited the salon? Maybe it was or maybe it wasn’t, but it was the perfect combination needed to feed the children in Nairobi. And that’s what it’s all about.

Joni Janis Hester - Making a Difference, One Cup at a Time

I attended a Lunch-n-Learn about Coins 4 Kids in 2010 and have been passionate about the cause ever since.  Being an IP employee as well as the spouse of an IP employee, I felt inspired to get the business that I work for (Foodservice) involved in the fundraising efforts.
Click on this photo to order
We started off with sales of discontinued Foodservice products to IP employees. We held these “cup sales” at the Memphis offices as well as at our three Foodservice manufacturing facilities within the U.S.  This was a great way to bridge a gap with our manufacturing facilities to involve them in the Coins 4 Kids campaign.
Click on this photo to order
Our cup sales have been extremely successful, so it was time to “up our game!”  That is when the idea developed to produce a 12oz paper hot cup to promote Coins 4 Kids.  I worked with Communications to develop artwork for a cup to be used in IP break rooms during the campaign to help raise awareness.  Foodservice once again worked collaboratively to make this happen and on top of that, committed to donate 20% off the proceeds from the sale of these cases of cups to the World Food Program.

In Foodservice, our tagline for our product is “Making a Difference One Cup at a Time” and that has truly become my personal motto in coordinating all of these fundraising efforts and events.

Just recently becoming a mother myself, I can’t imagine my child not receiving meals and the proper nutrition he needs.  Seeing those precious faces of the children in Nairobi makes me want to do as much as I can to make a difference in their lives.

Meet Hutch!

Both of Hutch's  parents work at International Paper Company. They are doing a campaign on each of the floors where they work, during Spring 4 kids week, in which they will be asking people to help Hutch "Fill his bucket" with Coins... 4 Kids!

It sounds like a contest is brewing up right there, wouldn't you say?!

It will take roughly twenty of the regular sized Coins 4 Kids cups to fill Hutch's bucket!

Let's cheer them both on! We will be sure to let you know which parent is able to fill Hutch's cup up to the highest amount!

Joni is in Tower 3 in Foodservice, and Jeff is in Tower 1 in Papers, in case you want to help one or the other win!

We LOVE this! Go Hutch! Go Joni and Jeff!! Go IP Coins 4 Kids!

Support for Coins 4 Kids Runs in the Family

Spring 4 Kids' online auction contains a wide variety of items from vacations to jewelry and home decor.  This year's auction is 'Lucky' to include a gorgeous wreath from Amy Lucky in the Home Decor category.  Amy has always been creative and began making decorative wreaths for her own front door several years ago. Almost immediately, other people noticed her beautiful work.  She began getting orders from friends and family for wreaths of their own! When people she had never even met began making orders, she decided it was time to start her own business on Facebook.  What began as a hobby took off into a successful small business.

Amy's parents, Kirt and Caroline Cuevas, have been long time Coins 4 Kids supporters and volunteers for Spring 4 Kids events. Amy was inspired to donate to the online auction when she learned that the proceeds from one donated wreath could feed two children for a year. The support for feeding children in Nairobi truly runs in the family.

You can bid on one of Amy's designs in the Spring 4 Kids online auction and soon you can welcome guests into your home in style!

*You can find Amy Lucky Designs on Facebook*

Far and Wide

As a spouse of an International Paper employee,  I love the feeling of being connected to a worldwide family. The global effort of the International Paper family coming together to feed children is a wonderful testament to our company.  From the mills to the data centers, from Memphis, Tennessee to Sao Paulo, Brazil, to Hyderabad, India we all unite for this worthy project.

Coins 4 Kids has been supporting the World Food Programme in Nairobi, Kenya for the past decade.  With the support of dedicated and generous volunteers, International Paper employees and their families have raised enough funds to cover well over a million meals for some of the world's hungriest children.

We, the volunteers for Coins 4 Kids, look forward to another decade of generosity from our International Paper family around the world.

A Chance! Meet Angi and Misty!

We spoke to two of the Spring 4 Kids auction team volunteers about their experience working on the auction team. This is their first year helping out with this effort.

Meet Angi and Misty.
Misty and her husband Tom along with Angi and her husband Mike. For these two girlfriends, deciding to help with the auction of Coins4Kids has been a learning experience.
For these two this experience has brought them many fond memories and a wonderful experience.

We asked them, "What is your favorite memory of the Spring 4 Kids effort thus far?"

Angi and Misty responded saying their favorite memory was "at the Spring 4 Kids luncheon, seeing everyone so involved around the event."

The two say they will "long remember the atmosphere and all the good energy in the room.  They expressed that "they will keep with them all the caring faces of the IP families and the community."

They went on, "People are willing to donate their time and services toward a great cause. They know how fortunate their children are to go to school and have a hot meal.

But sometimes we forget.

Through Coins4Kids we are able to give just that to the children in Nairobi.

Everyone deserve a chance!"

Fun Auction Item - Beach Cruisers from BASF!

As we get ready for the upcoming C4K auction, here's a preview of another great item that will be available on the auction site!

BASF, the world's largest chemical company AND one of our IP Coated Paperboard customers, has generously donated "His & Hers" beach cruisers to the effort.  How cool is that?

It all started with the awesome teamwork of "BART" (the dynamic duo of Ruth Towler & Bill Ryan), just two of the many people tirelessly working to secure items for the C4K Auction.

A few members of IP's Coated Paperboard business team (Greg Gibson - VP and GM, David Schwartz - Marketing Director, Mike Heldman - Marketing Manager of Product Innovation & Sustainability) informed Ruth and Bill about several possible contacts for securing items for the auction.  "BART" followed up with each referral through email and personal calls.

BASF quickly expressed their interest in being part of the C4K effort. Bill and Ruth held several discussions with Jeff Prosser, BASF's Global Key Accounts Manager for Specialty Chemicals about C4K, the upcoming auction, how to garner more awareness, and grow our bidder base!

It was finally agreed His & Her 3-speed beach cruisers would be perfect for the auction!  BASF will also be writing a story for their April newsletter highlighting Coins 4 Kids, and generating interest from their employees.

What a great example of multiple people coming together for an important cause!  Thank you BASF for your generous support for Coins 4 Kids!

CATCH THE SPIRIT! IP's Global Sourcing Division holds live auction benefitting Coins 4 Kids, Wednesday, March 26th!

Global Sourcing Coins 4 Kids Floor Champion, Neta Latham, is an enthusiastic supporter of Coins 4 Kids and its mission to feed schoolchildren in Nairobi.  She is serving in her position for the second year in a row, jumping at the chance to be a part of the fundraising events this year.  Neta and her husband, who serves on the Fayette County School Board, are passionate about education and believe the school feeding program helps to educate the children as well as nourish their bodies.

Floor Champions are responsible for coordinating and assembling their floor's raffle basket to be raffled during the Spring 4 Kids annual luncheon.  Last year's Global Sourcing basket, "Boot Scootin in San Antonio" was a big hit and included round trip air fare to San Antonio, accommodations, rental car, gift cards and even a cowboy hat made out of IP paper and signed by International Paper CEO, John Faraci.

To raise the funds needed to assemble this fantastic basket, Neta brainstormed and decided to run a small live auction on the 8th floor.  It was such a big success that she's bringing it back this year!  This year's basket will be themed "San Francisco - a Gateway Experience" and will include air fare, hotel, rental car, restaurant certificate, sunset cruise, Alcatraz tour, wine glasses and the movie "The Rock"

Here are the details:
    When - Wednesday, March 26th from 11:30 - 12:15
    Where - Tower I, 6th floor lobby
Who - Global Sourcing and EHS&S employees
What - live auction with many exciting items including Grizzlies IP box seats with parking passes, hotel gift certificates, round of golf at Ridgeway Country Club, restaurant gift certificates and much more....all benefitting Coins 4 Kids! Rick Ouellette is the auctioneer, and does an amazing job every year to feed more children!

So, if you work in either of these two divisions, we encourage you to participate this Wednesday and know that your donations are feeding children who really need our help.  We wish Neta and her team the best of luck with the auction!  Like so many International Paper employees and spouses, she exemplifies the spirit of dedication and generosity that enables Coins 4 Kids to help so many children in need.

Inspirational Event

Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate a Decade of Dedication today at the Memphis Botanic Gardens. We are so glad you could join us!

We also want to thank Lauren Bush Lauren for making the trip to Memphis and sharing the incredible journey she has been on as she has built FEED Projects.

As of today, FEED has provided more than 75,000,000 meals to school feeding programs around the world. She has done this through the sale of her bags and other FEED accessories and apparel. To say that Lauren is an inspiration is an understatement. Her heart for this program and for the hungry children around the world is evident in both her actions and her words. It was a true delight to have her join us today as we began our celebration of a "Decade to Dedication" of Coins 4 Kids.

These great special edition FEED bags were for sale today. Don't worry if you missed out on getting one as there will be more available on our online auction on April 7-12 on the Bidding for Good.com/IPcoins4kids website.

One side of the bag has the FEED logo and the other side has Coins 4 Kids! Such a sweet keepsake.

Mimi Gibson gave a wonderful speech in which she shared the incredible effort of Coins 4 Kids! Her passion for feeding the children in Nairobi is contagious and shines right through her whenever she speaks about it.

Many who attended were so inspired by today's event that they asked us how they could get involved. One fun and simple way is to fill a cup with your spare change. You can get these cups, or a kit for your school, church, or other organization by clicking on this photo of cups.

Once again, on behalf of Heath and John Faraci, and everyone at International Paper Company, thank you, Lauren, for celebrating a Decade of Dedication with us. It was truly an event to remember.
